Current 93 - The Fire of the Mind



Very psychedelic experimental ambient with wafting (synth?!? I'm not sure...) sounds (accompanied by a spacy guitar) in a quite fast rhythm ever raising in volume, like an audio-stroboscope, up to a powerful climax creating a more and more relaxed but conscious state of cerebral theta-waves.

It's really great for recreational breaks, lie down, listen for approx. 20 minutes to that one-track EP, I swear you will relax very deeply but won't get asleep. Very refreshing, for example after an exhausting working day.

It was once added (limited to 1.000 copies) to a book by the spiritual teacher James Low of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and on the backside of the cover it is written: "This piece was recorded by Current 93 for release with "Simply Being" by James Low, and is not to be sold separately from it, or all the hells shall open at once for those responsible."

ION - Madre Protegenos



After departing from Antimatter, Duncan Patterson (ex-Anathema) set to work on his next endeavor, Ion. 'Madre, Protegenos' can appeal to fans of everything from Antimatter, world music, and most things on the Projekt label. It is fairly minimalist in its approach, the album's true wealth stemming from its various layered soundscapes and the introspective ambience they recreate. These provide the dreamier elements of the album with an ominous and melancholic shade. Having Irish mysticism and an exotic Mediterranean backdrop as its essential cornerstones, the project has slowly evolved into an international venture, stretching over continents and oceans, with contributions by musicians from Greece, Ireland, Mexico, Australia and Italy. A rich array of influences are shaped into a multi-textured body of work, based around smooth acoustic instrumentation (where acoustic guitar and various percussions take a leading role, alongside occasional harp, flute or viola arrangements), discreet keyboard elements, and remarkable voices.

Darkwood - Notwendfeuer



At a time when authentic neo-folk seems more dead than alive Darkwood comes up with a new and very strong album, entitled ‘Notwendfeuer’. This record is without a doubt the best the project has released so far. It is a very typical German neo-folk album but despite that one that is all but disappointing.


Of course all classic elements are here: tranquil and simple acoustic guitar melodies, dark romantic singing, atmospheric instrumentation by violin, cello and accordion and some subtle but powerful drumming in the background.

The songs might be simple but very strong and effective. Just after hearing them one time you guaranteed have some favorite tracks, which have settled in your head. Fantastic are ‘Verlorenes Heer’ and ‘Ostenfeld’. Beautiful is the subtle trumpet sound on ‘Feuerkreis’ and the troubadour mood of ‘ Wintermдrchen’ is simple brilliant.

Maybe more outspoken as before is the image of Darkwood. The cover and references in the music are possible a bit more explicit as before. On ‘Notwendfeuer’ of course the themes are youth, struggle and honour. This time work from German writers as Otto Ernst, Georg Trakl are Karl Brцger is referred to. Darkwood pays tribute to these writers in a romanticized way because of their anti-modern attitude.

By doing this the music is lifted from to a higher level, because the themes of these writers fit the mood of the songs so perfectly. By keeping true the themes and style of German neo-folk, and even pushing it a bit, Darkwood has made one of the best albums in the genre and leaves (once) like-minded bands like Forseti, Sonne Hagal and Orplid far behind.

Biosphere - Cirque



"I work slowly", Geir Jenssen said in 1994, when asked about the three-year gap between his first two releases under the name Biosphere. Visions of six-month-long nights in Northern Norway amongst (whatever the thermal equivalent of visions may be) of hibernating temperatures would seem to explain this quasi-confession. As if taking one's time would be considered dangerously old-fashioned, as if long processes of creation were doomed to turn into artistic suicide.

Quite the opposite.

First clue: the name.
In 1990, having learned of the Biosphere 2 Space Station Project, a sealed, gigantic glass dome in the Arizona Desert, then in its early stages, Geir decides to adopt it as his new alias.

The sound. The meaning. A sound that describes what the word means.
The Biosphere 2 Research Project was meant to test the possibilities of building self-sufficient space colonies, and hosted entire families living in a completely detached environment for years.

Geir Jenssen's Biosphere has likewise been steadily creating a self-contained aural universe. Once inside, we will experience the outside world through the spherical window. As if watching a movie where, despite the monumental scale, we still manage to feel we belong in the script.

Second clue: the distance.
Geir Jenssen has decided to base himself permanently in his birthplace of Tromso, Norway, 400 miles north of the Arctic
circle, having briefly tried out Brussels and Oslo before retreating back in total disinterest from the frenzy of too many
cultural offers.

What exactly goes on in Tromso? And why, then, does Biosphere resonate so strongly in your walkman at rush hour in some downtown metropolis of the Western World? Because it surgically extracts time out of urgency, because it opens up huge spaces right at the dead centre of your urban claustrophobia. The viewpoint of the astronaut who contemplates Planet Earth from outer space and reflects on the billions of little lives down there.
Someone called it 'Arctic Sound'.
Maybe.

Third clue: the distance.
Geir's musical history has always been one of progressive self-distillation. Of maximising one’s chosen few resources. Bel Canto, Geir's band in the late eighties, had signed up with Crammed Discs in Brussels and, after two albums, looked poised for crossover marketability. This is precisely when Geir decides to leave Bel Canto and start working on his own.
The reasons? A growing need to move on. A growing need for growth.

Two years, four singles and one album followed under the alias Bleep. First symptoms of Geir's Ambient Techno that, by 1995, had come full circle and become truly mainstream. History revisited: the use of "Novelty Waves" (a track from Patashnik, his second album as Biosphere) on a Levi's advertisement proved to be the last techno straw for Geir. Rather than turning achievement into formula, we see him dropping whatever was left of the hard beats, moving once again into unnamed, undiscovered territories.

One could still call them Ambient Territories if not for their deeply emotional undercurrent.

Someone said 'Less is more'...
Precisely.

Fourth clue: interchange.
Geir says that music that excites him never fails to trigger visions in his mind. And I personally dare you to find music which is more visual. Soundtracks, yes, Biosphere has released the score for Insomnia and Man With a Movie Camera, and been elsewhere extensively commissioned.

Background music.... not quite. This is synaesthetic music. Sound sculpture, music as photographic collage. Echoes as warning signs. Liquid beats, samples as snapshots, faraway speeches of open-ended meaning.

No, not the hungover Balearic beaches. No, not even the deeply catatonic Winter nights of Norway. Something deeper, warmer, so much more human, so much more visceral.
Contemplation. Remember that word?
Try it.

Fifth clue: the circles.
Substrata, Biosphere in 1997, displayed an impossible proximity to perfection and is now an insistent visitor to the lists of 'best ambient album of all time', thus establishing a new canon for contemporary classicism. What distinguishes this new classicism is its humility: its status was never a pre-requisite, but rather an ageing process that reminds one of the finest wines. Substrata's status as the new canon of ambient happened as a consequence of the monumental existentialism it contains - ambient music is no longer simply ignorable or 'interesting'.

Cirque followed up in 2000, a dark, saturated recording, quietly descending from wonderment to despair, inspired as it was by the true story of a young North American explorer who lived a brutal dream of ascetism but fatally lost himself in the dense forests of Alaska. Cirque's dramatic tension is magistrally woven amongst the sounds of enclosure, existentialist, dangerous, alone.

Sixth clue: complexity.
Geir Jenssen finds himself at a complex and fascinating crossroads right now: the heritage of Ambient Techno resting on his shoulders, the masterpiece of ambient music resting on his shoulders - we can feel the proximity of a new quantum leap into unimaginable territories. And if those territories, yet without a name, are not yet inhabitable, Biosphere will map them out for us, and recount his processes of discovery. The sound palette is now becoming lower, more abstract, more patient, more complex.

Geir Jenssen has always proved to be a masterful sculptor of sound, but, most importantly, has always known how to sculpt the silence that surrounds sound. In our world immersed in excess, Biosphere becomes the certainty of a softness that hits harder.
Biosphere has always made you pay attention. It now demands you to be active in your listening.
Use it as a seed.
Do it.

Released as a beautiful two-panel digipack with bronze metal stampings on Michael Moynihan's Storm label, 'Barbara Carmina' ('Barbarian Hymns') is the debut album by Sangre Cavallum, a gathering of traditional musicians from Northern Portugal and Galicia. For those lucky enough to have attended their live performances in Portugal a few years back or to have at least listened to these recordings, needless to say that this release was long awaited.

Inspired by their homeland, its traditions, its community of the living and the dead, its vestiges... Sangre Cavallum offer here a unique ethnological-musical document filled with mysteries and memories. They describe their music as "old and new tribute songs to the land of our birth"... and it is definitely what 'Barbara Carmina' is. A tribute to their ancestors whose spectres and souls seem to float under the overall compositions as if they carried on transmitting the oral traditions to the youngest (as the voice of the child singing 'Barbara Carmina' on the first track and also present on the last part suggests). Indeed, this album sounds unlike any other in the neofolk, medieval style. Sangre Cavallum have managed to express in their own particular way, through words and music of their own, their roots and traditions. And from this point of view, this release also appears as refreshing; sounding authentic, sincere because of the true and sincere knowledge and implication of these musicians. A feeling of honoured and respected traditions emanates from the whole album... It's not just tradition as an artifice or a pretext chosen amongst many others to release something....

The using of traditional instruments (tambourine, mandolin, Iberian lute...), mixed with female and male vocals and some fine background sounds create different atmospheres ranging from melancholy ('Luadas' 'Rio Douro' 'Flumen Cavallum') to joy ('Limia, Flumen Oblivionis', 'Sete Punhaladas') as suggested by the cover photos of a musical ritual taken during some old wine fests.

02. "Прикосновение неба", очередная талантливая работа от моего друга Lukosa из Польши.
Великолепный, светлый трек. Красивая гитара и приятный ритм.
03. "Песок в ваших ботинках", новая работа от проекта Soren S (Soeren Sube)
известный так же как S-Tune, немного грустная, но приятная тема.
Каждый найдет здесь тему для размышления.
04. "Бейрут" от Johnа Askewа с его нового альбома "Z List Uber Star".
Немного напоминает по своей стилистики рассвет, или закат.
05. "Вдохновение веры", трек оправдывает свое название, ведь благодаря вере иногда происходят невероятные вещи.
06. "Адриатика", прекрасный красивый ритмичный трек.

08. "Назад к звездам", когда-нибудь мы вернемся туда, откуда пришли...

11. "Семь Городов", человек, который не нуждается в представлении. Очередной новый ремикс трека на все времена.
12. "Летний ветер" просто невероятная по звучанию и красоте композиция от наших
с вами соотечественников Michaelа Witnessа и Invisible Sounds (HOKKAIDO) в ремиксе от Mikeа EFEXА.
13. "Красная река" продолжение предыдущей темы, не менее слабый трек от Chrisа Zippelа, та же приятная гитара)))
